Résumé : | To improve health status, an understanding of the population characteristics is essential. Through an epidemiologic framework, we can assess how and why health care needs are distributed throughout a population and evaluate the use and efficacity of interventions. Thus, to improve the health status of a population, one needs to understand the population characteristics, the distribution and level of need, factors affecting the use of health care services, and the implications upon the system if the desired level of health status is not achieved. In chapters 2 and 3, issues and methods for measuring need and health are discussed. Subsequent chapters illustrate how analytic studies can be used to evaluate health care programs and policies.
