Résumé :

The five studies in this Special Issue are mainly concerned with understanding and improving diagnosis in industrial and medical work. Three studies concern industrial work and the two others, medical work. There are two cases of fault diagnosis ; one in radar and computer equipment installed on frigates in the Royal Netherlands Navy, and the other in an automatic hot-strip steel mill in Wales. The third industrial study concerns control of an blast furnace process by French shift supervisors and elements of diagnosis and prognosis within this decision-making activity. Finally, two papers from England focus on medical decision-making. One investigates the differential diagnosis of epileptic and non epileptic seizures in an emergency context. The other investigates treatment decisions by GPs, such as whether to prescribe hormone replacement therapy for middle-aged women, or prophylactic treatment for patients with high cholesterol levels.
