Surveys of patient satisfaction with hospital and community care have proliferated following recent National Health Service changes. While these are mainly quantitative, some questionnaires also ask for patients'qualitative comments ; these are, however, rarely analysed. This article describes an analysis of qualitative comments included in a questionnaire measuring patients'satisfaction with nursing in acute hospital care. Younger patients were more likely to comment on perceived problemes within the health service, and patients who completed questionnaires at home were more critical of certain aspects of their hospital experience. Overall, however, a general question asking for patients'comments generated only general answers in the main ; specific comments on the nursing service were rare. The implications for other studies appending open-ended questions to patient satisfaction scales are discussed.
