Résumé : | After two decades of gains, Greece’s life expectancy at birth experienced a sharp decrease of 1.5 years between 2019 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With a slight rebound in 2022, it returned to the 2012 level of 80.7 years, which is equal to the EU average. Stroke, ischaemic heart disease and lung cancer are the leading causes of death. Smoking rates in Greece are high: one in four adults smoke daily. Obesity rates are on a par with the EU average among adults, but are higher among adolescents. In contrast, Greece registers low rates of heavy drinking. People in the lowest income quintile are more likely to smoke, be obese and report heavy episodic drinking than those in the highest quintile. |
