More than 20 years ago, in 1976, the dramatic ICMESA accident which was to focus the world attention on the mostly damaged town, Seveso, occurred. Ten years after the accident, in 1986, Region Lombardio created the Fondazione Lombardia per l’Ambiente, aimed at devoting its financial and human resources to the development of the technical-scientific knowledge necessary to properly protect human health and environment. Although the Foundation’s statute includes neither interventions nor monitoring activities on the Seveso territory and the territory of the other towns involved in 1976 accident, the Foundation has anyway promoted several initiatives feeling a strong ideal, moral and scientific bond with the men and institutions that have recovered the area and monitored the health of inhabitants in the first eight years of emergency.
