Economic studies of radon prevention in homes were previously conducted. They were not based on these recent proposals and usually evaluated remediation programs in areas where exposure was low, e.g. 21 Bq.m-3 in United Kingdom (UK), compared to France (90 Bq.m-3). Thus, the authors undertook a cost-effectiveness analysis of radon remediation policies in residential buildings in Franche-Comté, one of the most radon-affected areas in France (mean indoor radon concentration: 124.4 Bq.m-3), covering a population of 1,158,652 inhabitants. Targeted screening in at risk areas and mass screening in the entire area, both followed by remediation proposal, they compared to absence of screening. They used the costs and effectiveness of radon identification and remediation, and the medical costs and health impact of lung cancer in Franche-Comté. The results should help decision makers about lung cancer prevention programs and radon remediation.
