Data from the registration of HIV infections show that the spread of the virus reached a plateau in Belgium during the last years. Even, since 1994, a decreasing trend of the annual number of cases has been observed. Nevertheless, other indicators show an increasing trend ; it is the case among young men having sex with men and among STD patients. These opposite observations indicate that it becomes necessary to implement more complete surveillance systems in order to monitor the spread of HIV in the country.
