[BDSP. Notice produite par INVS R0x6dAWF. Diffusion soumise à autorisation]. Q fever is a widespread zoonosis in Bulgaria, caused by Coxiella burnetii. The major route of transmission from animals to humans is by infected aerosols. In early May 2004, an increase was noted in the number of pneumonia cases in patients attending a clinic in Botevgrad (population 28 000, situated 60 km northeast of the capital Sofia). Immediately the HEI, together with the veterinary and municipality authorities, implemented preventive measures to stop the outbreak in Botevgrad.
