[BDSP. Notice produite par INIST R0xORVJh. Diffusion soumise à autorisation]. Examination of current public health promotion efforts shows that they do not take full advantage of new behavioral science models or theories of behavioral change. Especially noteworthy are the lack of empirical data to support the efforts to change behaviour and the heavy reliance on the health belief model. We argue that behavioral science could make significant contributions to public health above and beyond these current approaches. It is particularly important to broaden the theoretical basis of health promotion efforts so that it becomes apparent that behaviour, including health-related behaviour, occurs in a context and that motivational, environmental and social influences can be used to change such behaviour on a long term basis.
