[BDSP. Notice produite par INIST r2sR0xsQ. Diffusion soumise à autorisation]. Prevalence rate and determinants of MRSA carriage in nursing home residents were examined performing a cross-sectional study in a large Belgian nursing home with 449 residents. 7. 1% of all residents proved to be colonized by MRSA as documented by at least one positive culture. There was no relation with gender, concurrent cardiovascular disease, diabetes, skin diseases other than ulcers, cancer, recent use of antibiotics or the time since the last hospitalisation. A positive relation was found however with concurrent pulmonary disease, skin ulcer, urinary incontinence, a urinary catheter in situ and increasing disorientation in time or space. MRSA carriage turns out to be a real problem in Belgian nursing home residents, without reaching the high prevalence rates that have been described in the U.S.. If our findings are confirmed in other homes, systematic measures for treatment and prevention of spread of MRSA in Belgian nursing homes should be considered.
