[BDSP. Notice produite par INIST fR0x23Wr. Diffusion soumise à autorisation]. In the present paper, reports of animal experiments and of epidemiological studies concerning the cardiovascular effects of exposure to carbon disulfide (CS2) are reviewed. The animal experiments show an atherogenic effect of CS2. The mortality studies indicate a relative risk of coronary mortality varying from 0.83 to 3.61. The morbidity studies had, however, considerable different results, the reasons of which are discussed. Overall the evidence that CS2 is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease seems convincing. Further research is, however, required to clarify the mechanisms of these effects in humans, whether they are reversible, the geographical differences in morbidity, the exposure-response relationship and the interaction with other cardiovascular risk factors. International cooperation for longitudinal studies, with well standardized common study designs are suggested.
